When you're struggling,

it can feel overwhelming to reach out for help.


Fear of change, scrutiny by others, or the unknown future can be paralyzing. Anxiety can lead to constant restlessness, being wound up tight, and irritable outbursts at the smallest things. Depression can make you feel heavy, like you’re moving in slow motion amidst a sea of sadness and hopelessness. Grief can come in unexpected waves, knocking you down. Caregiver overwhelm can be both deeply exhausting and excruciatingly painful as you have the front row seat of watching a loved one fade away.



It takes incredible courage to ask for support when we are already barely hanging on.

I recognize that bravery in every client I work with because I have been there.



My work in home hospice, as well as my own history of personal struggles, most strongly inform my compassionate approach. Painful losses, beginning when I was young, have helped me develop a clear understanding that every minute of this life counts.


I am a deep listener who creates the time and safe space for my clients to share their challenges without being rushed or judged.

THERAPY


I provide therapy using a variety of techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT), solution-focused therapy, and grief-informed therapy, among others. What this means for you is that I have a wide range of tools to use in our work together. But, all the types of counseling that I’m trained in aren't as important as the actual connection you and I develop.



If you don't feel safe and heard, the list of my certifications is meaningless.



A common phrase I use with clients is that what we work on is ‘simple, not easy.’ Many efforts we can make to bring ourselves more peace are not difficult to understand, but consistently using new skills, or developing healthier habits, can be. Being meaningfully accountable to another person who understands what you’re going through often helps.


I will happily refer you to other appropriate licensed professionals when I feel I'm not the best person to meet your therapy needs. Or, you may already have a therapist you are working well with - that is fine! I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with them, so together we can achieve the best outcome for you.

LIFESTYLE COACHING


I provide education and feedback about the lifestyle changes you can make that will have the greatest impact on improving your brain health.We work together to identify one or two areas and set reasonable goals for small changes.


The concept of ‘lifestyle medicine’ will underlie much of what we discuss. The six areas that we can choose to work from include:


  • Nutrition: Increasing the amount of unprocessed and plant-based food in your meals.


  • Motion: Increasing the amount you move your body and reducing how much you sit.


  • Relaxation: Increasing activities that reduce your stress and promote a relaxed mind.


  • Connection: Creating and strengthening your relationships - with yourself and others.


  • Self-Medication: Reducing or eliminating your intake of unhealthy substances.


  • Restoration: Improving your quantity and quality of sleep and other restorative practices.


Knowing what needs to change is much different than doing the change. Consistently implementing new habits over time is the goal and being held accountable by another person in a meaningful way is the critical factor.

NON-MEDICATION


I keep up on current evidence so that I can provide education on options that go beyond therapy, lifestyle changes, and medication. Research continues to demonstrate that there are many non-medication options that improve brain health. Some of these include:


  • light box therapy


  • nutraceuticals (supplements)


  • meditation


  • a daily gratitude practice


  • non-invasive treatments, like transcranial magenetic stimulation (TMS)


  • and more


We can discuss which of these options may work best for your situation. In the case of TMS, (or other procedural interventions), I will help you find a local provider and make a direct referral. In this way, we will all be working collaboratively on your care.

MEDICATION


I am a thoughtful prescriber. What this means is that medications are an option, but not the only option. I don’t believe we need to prescribe a medication for every diagnosis or for every symptom, but medications do work very well for some people. They are also the standard of treatment for certain conditions. I always follow standard psychiatric care in my prescribing practices, but I also include a holistic approach that brings in much more.


I have a prescribing mentor, per Colorado requirements, so this means my clients who are on medication have not only my experience to draw on, but also her many years in the psychiatry field. She does not attend sessions directly, but we do consult together on an as-needed basis. If you have any questions on her potential role in your care, please ask.

Taking care of another person’s needs is exhausting in every way:

physically, emotionally, and mentally.


I spent many years as both a professional caregiver and an unpaid one, functioning in survival mode, depleting my reserves over and over. After an accumulation of too many low days over weeks, months, and years, I finally recognized that I was giving too much to others, and not enough to myself. I was burnt out. It was difficult for me to seek out support because I had internalized that putting my needs first was ‘selfish.’ I had to learn that my ability to best care for others was directly correlated to the care I first showed myself.


To care well for another, we must first begin to care well for ourselves.


In this 3-step caregiver support program, I help you learn to do just that.

Step 1: Attend a Free “Caregiver Burnout Prevention” Class

Sundays, 12 pm to 1 pm

  • those who live day-to-day in crisis mode
  • those who fear becoming burnt out

This class offers:

  • education on signs of burnout & ways to avoid them
  • immediate, practical skills to manage distressing emotions

Step 2: Enroll in "Caregivers Overcoming Burnout" Course

Sundays, 2 pm to 3 pm

4-week course + 4 support group sessions

  • those who are burnt out
  • those who want to learn daily self-care
  • those who want to move out of crisis mode

This course offers:

  • (4) weekly classes that teach practical, self-care skills
  • the opportunity to reclaim a sense of control amid chaos

These (4) classes are structured sessions led by Jess. Attendance to each class is required as the content of each week builds on the week prior. The skill-building we will practice will help rebuild your resiliency by teaching you how best to care for yourself during times of overwhelm. At the end of this course, you will have:

  • practiced emotional regulation
  • gained self-awareness of your needs
  • learned to set assertive, healthy boundaries
  • identified internal and external resources

* Participants also receive (4) support group vouchers for Step 3 - to be used as needed (value $200) *

Horizon Psychiatry is a patient-centered, not payer-centered, practice. This means that I do not take insurance, or Medicare / Medicaid and am an out-of-network provider. I do provide a superbill - a detailed invoice for privately-insured clients to request possible reimbursement.

If you have private insurance, I can verify whether you have any out-of-network (OON) benefits through Reimbursify.

Psychiatric Intake Evaluation / Integrative Treatment Planning


90 minutes - 2 hours

$275 - $350



Comprehensive assessment and holistic treatment planning. Review of past records and initiating consultation with your other providers (at your discretion). I may also order labs or other testing.


  • 90 minute intakes are best for those without complex psychiatric / medical histories and for clients who can submit prior records / labs to me before we meet.


  • 2 hour intakes are best for those who don’t fit the above description.

Follow-Up Appointments


15 minutes - 1 hour+

$60 - $200+



I offer a range of follow-up appointment lengths to accommodate a variety of client situations:


  • 15 to 30 minutes are best for clients who are in the maintenance phase of treatment (that is, they feel generally stable); those who are willing and successfully able to do significant work on their own, between sessions; and those seeing me only for medication management.


  • 45 minutes or more are best for clients who want to see me for both therapy and other services; those who have just begun treatment with me; those with complex psychiatric or medical histories; and those feeling symptoms of distress on more days than not.

Since I work as a solo practitioner, any questions or concerns you have between sessions will always come directly to me. I strive to remain reasonably available on my work days to answer non-urgent questions. I cannot guarantee any availability on my non-work days and I am not a crisis provider.
